Mazomanie Bluff

Description:

Mazomanie Bluff is a village owned park adjacent to Lake Marion and
Wolf Run Trail. Through a system of trails, park users are guided
up a bluff of fractured dolomite overlaying sandstone in the
“driftless”, unglaciated region of north western Dane County.
The bluff rises more than 200 feet above the surrounding landscape
with steep slopes and rock outcroppings.

Trails of differing lengths and difficulties allow visitors to
explore the heavily forested portion of the park; scenic overlooks
of Mazomanie and the surrounding landscapes, including the bluffs
along the Wisconsin River; and ascend to the peak which is home to
the School Section Prairie.

The School Section Prairie is one of the largest remaining dry
prairie remnants in Dane County. The Prairie was recognized as a
Natural Community and added to the WI Dept of Natural Resources’
Natural Heritage Inventory. Over 65 prairie/savanna species have
been identified at the site; many are rare, protected species that
thrive on the dry prairie. It ranks among the top 6 sites in the
state of Wisconsin for the diversity of prairie-specialist insects.

Two trailheads are located within the park. One at the entrance to
the park and one at the top of the bluff at the entrance to the
School Section Prairie. Trailheads offer maps, a brief history of
the bluff as well as basic information about the School Section
Prairie
