Ice Age Trail Cross Plains Segment

Description:

The 2.8-mile Cross Plains Segment shows off the village of Cross Plains, which is situated along Black Earth Creek in a valley between tall bluffs. It sits at the boundary of the most recent glaciation to the east and north and the Driftless Area to the west and south. Meltwater from the receding glacier eroded and carried the terminal moraine downstream from the site of the village. (Ice Age Trail Alliance)

  • Visited Wilke farm segment yesterday March 22. Noticed preparations for burn of the upland prairie field. Yay! I propose an experiment on the survival of spring ephemeral to early fires. I would mark 100 Hepaticas with flags on wires. These plants are in the southeastern corner of the burn unit near the road. They are about to bloom with the fuzzy flower buds showing color. They will likely start blooming this week. I would propose doing the same for the Pasque Flowers but they don’t have over wintering foliage that can help locate them. I am concerned about the Pasques since most of the sites that I know they are in decline. Jim
